I have ALWAY wanted to make sea glass vases and bottles for my own decorating. And while there are many tutorials showing you how to create a sea glass look using glue and food coloring, I wanted something a little different. Original I should say. And I think I have figured it out.

And this is a great craft to include in the 30-day crafting challenge for sure! Farmhouse-style sea glass is definitely in my wheelhouse of crafting ideas! So I decided to figure out a way to make sea glass without using food coloring, glue or even resorting to spray paint.

And on one of my many outings to Dollar Tree, I picked up some glass vases, and even a few trinket boxes. I have never seen these before, so I definitely had to get a few. They are so pretty! I love the detail of the glass and the shapes. When I saw them, I thought of what a nice accent they would make in my decorating. And the fact that they were each $1.25 was even better. This is one of the reasons I really enjoy Dollar Tree. I can find little treasures like this and completely make them over into something truly one of a kind.
And while I loved the containers, I wasn’t crazy about the colors. So I was wondering if there was a way that I could paint the trinkets boxes? And I have to tell you the answer is a resounding YES!

First, I washed all my glass containers in warm soapy water and then allowed them to dry. Next, I did use some rubbing alcohol and wiped down the containers just to be sure I had removed any oily residue.

And this is where things get serious. I found 2 paints at Hobby Lobby that looked like sea glass. Or I should say, they look like I think sea glass should look like.

Then I painted all of the glass pieces I had.

Once the paint had dried, then I had to come up with something to add texture to my vases. And I had heard of a product that you can use for a sea glass look, but it was really expensive. So I started searching on Amazon, and I found my secret ingredient – powdered snow salt.

Powdered Snow Salt is the secret ingredient!

I had never heard of powdered snow salt before. But it was less than $8.00, so I figured, why not? And let me tell you, this was just the thing I was looking for to add some texture to my project!

I simply added the salt to a little bit of paint and then added a tiny bit of water. Next, I just painted this mixture over the glass pieces. Then allowed the glass to dry.

Then I took a little bit of colored paint and white chalk paint. And using a chip-style paint brush, I dry-brushed the glass. With the texture from the salt, I was able to create an aged look to the glass.

I am so happy with how these turned out. I was able to make my own style of sea glass, with a rustic twist.

Now, if you want to do this yourself – here are the step-by-step instructions!

DIY Farmhouse Style Sea Glass Bottles (and Trinket Boxes!)

What you will need:

  • Clean Glass bottles or containers
  • Sea Glass colored paint (I used an aqua color and beach glass)
  • Powdered Snow Salt
  • White chalk paint

Once you have made sure the glass is clean and free from any adhesive residue, paint the glass with the color of your choice. If you add a little bit of water, it will be more transparent.

Apply 2 coats of paint to the glass and allow it to fully dry

Mix some powdered snow salt with a little bit of the paint and add some water to thin it out. Then brush the mixture over the already painted glass. Again, allow it to fully dry

Next, dry brush a little bit of chalk paint onto the glass.

Decorate with raffia or jute and add any beads or adornments to your finished piece.

If you want to add some cordage, like jute or string wrapped around your bottle, this is when you would complete this last step.

I love sea glass! And I love the way all of my pieces turned out. I think they will be an excellent addition to my sea glass decor pieces that I use during the summer months. If you want to see what it looks like – be sure to come back around June for lots of pictures!

I even made a video to go along with this tutorial. You can watch it below or go to YouTube and subscribe to my channel!
