Make a DIY craft table that provides exactly what you need for your crafting sessions! With this tutorial, you’ll see how easy it is to turn basic materials into an attractive and useful workstation!
I remember a few years ago, I decided to use my daughter’s bedroom as my dedicated craft room. Don’t worry – I didn’t displace her! She had finished college and was engaged when I came to the realization that she wouldn’t need her bedroom at our home anymore. (Sigh) And my crafting hobby had really started to take over our dining room. So I decided it was time to have my ‘own’ space for crafting. It’s funny to look back and remember what the room was and how it transformed. I even made a video of it:
That video was made just over a year ago. And the biggest improvement, of course, was the HUGE DIY craft table that I designed and my husband helped me to create. I must say that even looking at this image now and comparing how my craft room has developed even more is pretty incredible. But I will share that with you a little bit later! First, I must tell you how you can craft your own craft room table! That’s why you’re here, right? Right! So, let’s DIY a craft room table, shall we?
Determine The Best Size For Your Space
When deciding on the size of the craft table, measure your space to determine how much room you have to work with. Make sure that the size of the finished piece will fit comfortably in your chosen location. Also, consider how many crafters will be using it at one time, and plan accordingly.
For me, it was fun to decide on the size because I was starting with a clean slate. The room is a standard size bedroom at 8’x10′. I knew I wanted the table to be in the center of the room, so I could work around it. And I decided I wanted my craft table to be tall and have storage. This led me down many rabbit holes, trying to find what I wanted to build my desk and be affordable. The cost was the biggest factor. I didn’t have a lot of money for this project. So each piece had to be reasonably priced. And of course, I ended up going to Amazon to look.
I am a HUGE fan of Amazon. Not only do they have just about anything I need, but they offer free and fast delivery. And I was able to find almost everything I needed for my DIY craft table!
DIY Craft Table
There are 2 main components to my craft table. The storage cubes, and the tabletop.
Mainstay 6 Cube Organizer
These cube organizers are SO helpful! They offer affordable storage space and don’t look too bad either. You can use them wide open like they come, or you can add storage bins to put things in. They are about 36″ tall, which makes a perfect height for a craft table. You can either sit or stand when working on your projects.

Now, this was the most important part of my table. I bought 4 cubes (they come in a 2 pack) and I assembled them while I waited for the next part of the project.

Kaboon 48 x 30 Universal Table Top
Once I had decided on the storage cubes, I needed to find something to be the tabletop for my craft table. I wanted something sturdy as well as pretty. But the most important factor was I wanted it to look like a table. I didn’t want it to look like a door or something that had been scavenged and then turned into a table.
And then I found this Universal Table Top by Kaboon.

The image shows the entire desk, but you only get the tabletop, which is what I wanted. And finding it in a 48×30″ top was perfect for my cubes to become the base of the table while allowing an open end for the chair to sit.
Now that I had the main pieces of my desk, we only had to buy some screws, washers, and liquid nails caulking to get it set up.
Gather Your Supplies
So once I had assembled the cubes, and the table top came, and we had the hardware to secure the top to the cubes, all that we had to do was put it together. The biggest takeaway I can give you here is to have everything ahead of time – BEFORE you start to assemble the desk. It will prevent a lot of frustration as well as preventing extra trips to Home Depot.
If you are planning to build a desk like this, you will need the following:
- Storage Cubes (they come 2 to a pack, so you need 2 packs and will have one extra)
- Tabletop
- Power Drill
- Screwdriver
- Caulking Gun
- Screws (This is a nice set – and we used 1″ screws)
- Flat Washers (this is a nice set and has many different sizes – I think ours were 5mm)
- Liquid Nails Caulk
- Drill Bit 1/16″ size (This links to a nice set of drill bits that would be great to have)
- And a helper would be very beneficial too!
When we were building my desk, we did it upside down. Meaning we put the table top on the floor and then set up the cubes allowing an opening on one end. This is where the chair will sit when the table is upright.

And I predrilled all of the holes before inserting the screws. This is important because you don’t want to crack the cubes. Once we had determined where the cubes would be placed. And the drill holes were all started before attaching the cubes to the tabletop. We also traced around the cubes on the tabletop so we would know where to place each cube before securing them in place.

Then before screwing the cubes down, we used liquid nails caulking on the tabletop where the cubes would be attached. The caulk is very strong and works well to secure the tabletop to the cubes, along with the screws.

And when putting in the screws, we used a washer first, then the screw. This allows a little extra height in case the screws are too long. You don’t want the screw ends poking through the top of your table! So don’t tighten the screws all the way with the drill. Instead, before they are screwed all the way in, switch to a screwdriver and hand-tighten each screw – just not too much!

We repeated this process until each cube was secured in place to the tabletop. And then together we uprighted the desk.

And once the table was sitting the way it would, my husband brought in his nail gun, and we tacked a few nails into the ends of the cubes to make the craft table even more secure.

Oh my goodness. When the table was all finished – I was just so excited. I can’t even tell you how happy I was to have my very own craft table! And we were able to DIY it ourselves for around $275.00!

And this table has served me so well! And like I said earlier, my craft room has definitely gone through some more changes since we built this a year ago.

I have added some extra command hooks to the table to keep my Cricut mats close by.

And although the cubes look a little messy (sorry about that), they provide a lot of extra storage for all of my crafting supplies. But you can never have enough storage right?

And if you like to learn by watching, I did make a video of the process of building the craft table, which I have linked below, in case you would like to see how easy it is to DIY a craft table like this for yourself.
