Creating a cozy and fluffy sleeping sanctuary is easier than you think. With the right comforter, fabrics, and thoughtful touches, you can make your bedroom into the ultimate relaxation space – perfect for catching some of those much-needed zzz’s.
Have you ever walked into a home store and were stopped by a floor display bed? The fluffiness made you stop, didn’t it? The beds in the stores look so comfortable. And the comfort level made you want to make your bed look like the store bed? Oh yes, I’ve been there.
I think I was walking into a Pottery Barn store, merely out of curiosity, of course, because there is no way I could ever afford to buy every component of a Pottery Barn bed. Nor would I want to spend a month’s salary to make my room over in true Pottery Barn furnishings. But I saw a bed totally made up. And it was beautiful.
It got me thinking if I could get the same (or similar) look in my own bedroom. And I am happy to report yes, you can get this look for yourself. And it is not as hard as you may think. Let me walk you through the process.

Bed Making Made Easy
Making a bed really isn’t all that hard. I find that having a beautifully styled bed is a great way to start every morning. And I really want to make the bed every day because it just looks so good!

If you put the time into styling your bed, it will be really easy for you to make it up each and every day. So let’s go step by step into the styling process, so you can see for yourself how you can create a cozy and fluffy bed.
How To Make Bedding Look Fluffy
The first thing we need to consider is each piece that we are putting on the bed, from the mattress topper to the throw and everything in between. The more layers you have, the fluffier your bed will become. If you are more of a minimalist, you can still have a nicely styled bed. Take our bed, for example. I prefer a bedspread to a comforter. I love the way it flows down the sides of the bed.
However, if you really want a fluffy bed that is begging to be jumped into, go for the comforter. You will get a lot more ‘fluff’ factor with a comforter. Or you can buy a Duvet cover. A Duvet cover is basically a cover for a comforter or a fluffy insert. It takes less to make a Duvet cover than it does a comforter. So you can probably find a better quality Duvet for less than a new comforter. Then you plop your comforter into the Duvet and put it onto your bed. Easy-Peasy!
How To Make Your Mattress More Comfortable
How long have you had your mattress? Something to consider while you are getting ready to create a cozy, fluffy bed for sure. The overall comfort you have in your bed truly does start with your mattress. And if you have a new mattress, then you are all set. But what if you have had your mattress for 10+ years? Is it time to replace it?
We recently replaced our mattress. Actually, we did it twice within a year.
The first time, I fell for the mass advertising showing the memory foam mattresses coming to you in a box. No easy feat for a king-size mattress, you know? But that mattress, well, it fell short on the comfort level. My advice; if you are investing in a new mattress, go physically see and try it out to make sure it truly is the mattress of your dreams. Otherwise, you will be stuck with an extra mattress, or worse, you won’t be comfortable in your bed.
The second mattress we bought was MUCH better. I actually went to a store that had it. We tried it out and then waited until it was on sale before we bought it. We have been sleeping on it for just over a year now, and it is incredible.
So if you are happy with your current mattress or can’t afford to get a new one, something you can do to elevate your mattress and your comfort level while you sleep is to add a quilted mattress cover.
Not only does a mattress cover protect your mattress, but it also adds a layer to your bed. And this is the first step or addition to your mattress to make your bed fluffy.
Considering Your Sheets
The next step to layering your bed is the sheets. I love sheet sets. A new set of sheets is a nice way to add a new style to your bedroom. You can opt for a solid color or pattern. Or you can mix it up and do one of each.
The sheets that you choose are a really important part of your bed because this is the part you are going to come into contact with. So you want to have high-quality material in the sheets you choose. I have been very happy with a set of bamboo sheets I bought from Amazon. They have worn really well and are very comfortable as well.

First, put the fitted sheet on the bed. This will go over the mattress topper. If you have a large mattress, you will want to find a sheet set with deep pockets. This means the fitted sheet can completely cover the mattress and be secure around the bottom of it. The stretchier the material, the easier this part will be.
Creating A Cozy and Fluffy Bed
And just a side note here, I also like to take an extra fitted sheet and put this over the box spring of our bed. It gives a finished look, so I am not staring at the boxspring material after I finish making my bed. Or you can buy a box spring cover for your bed. They are very affordable. But I use a fitted sheet because I have a lot of sheets!
After the fitted sheet is on the bed, gather the flat sheet. Make sure it is centered, so you have enough drop on either side of your mattress to tuck it. BUT – don’t tuck it in yet. Wait until after the next step of our bed-making process.
Is It A Quilt, Blanket, Or Coverlet?
Now this step, you can choose from a few different options. A quilt, blanket, or coverlet. Depending on what you have and how warm you want your bed to be will be the determining factor of what you use. Just make sure you use the size appropriate piece. Again, you want to have enough material on either side of your bed to be able to tuck it in.
Place the blanket, quilt, or coverlet over the flat sheet. Then tuck in the bottom. And when you get to the bottom corners, decide if you want a hospital-type corner or something a little more modern, like folding the corner toward the head of the bed.

I opt for the hospital corner. I prefer the crisp fold. But that’s my personal preference. Play around with the way you tuck and fold the bottom corners in.
Next, go to the top or head of the bed and fold back the coverlet about 4 inches. And then, fold the top edge of the flat sheet over the coverlet. Then tuck in the remaining exposed flat sheet and coverlet. Your finished product should look something like this:

A Cozy Bed Is All About The Layers
Get creative when layering fabrics and textures! You can do this by adding a throw blanket to the mix, or if fancy throw pillows are more your style, you can use a variety of sizes made from different fabrics. A faux fur throw blanket is the perfect way to make your bed look inviting and cozy. And if additional warmth is what you need, add a heavier fabric-like velvet or sherpa-on top for optimal fluffiness and comfort.
Pillows, Pillows, and More Pillows
Now that you’ve got the comforter and bedding sorted, it’s time to think about your pillows. Using an array of different sizes and thicknesses of pillows is one of the keys to creating a fluffy bed.

You can never have enough pillows— in my opinion. My husband, however, probably wouldn’t agree. Layer up and choose from different sizes for added texture and comfort. Not only does this give your sleeping area those beautiful and desirable aesthetical vibes, but it will also support your posture while you sleep peacefully throughout the night.
Our bed starts with two standard sleeping pillows, followed by two king-size pillows, then two Euro-shaped pillows, two 20″ throw pillows, and finally, one patterned throw pillow. I know it may seem like a lot. But this works well for our King size bed.
Creating a Cozy and Fluffy Bed
And to get a really full look to your pillows, it’s all about the size. For example, the Euro shape pillow shams that I have on my bed have 28″ Euro pillow inserts in a 26″ Euro pillow sham. This makes the overall pillow look really full. It also makes it really easy to do that karate chop and have the indentation stay in the pillow.
Don’t Forget a Throw Blanket
Throw blankets not only look great draped over the foot of your bed, but they can also add warmth and coziness. Look for a style that adds a different type of texture, like faux fur or velvet. Something different than your comforter or duvet. You can also change the overall style simply by swapping out the throw blanket, depending on the season.

And if you want to elevate the look even more, select colors that complement your other décor pieces to ensure the overall look is what you have been wanting.
Think About the Scents
Keeping your room clean and fresh will do a lot for the overall ‘scent’ of your bedroom. You can help this by keeping the bedding fresh as well as keeping dirty laundry out of the bedroom. But also consider adding in some other scents as well.
A pillow mist is a really nice way to add a light fragrance to your bedroom. Personally, I really like Muse Apocathary Pillow Ritual in Amber Cashmere. I love the smell of ‘cashmere’ and ‘amber’ as well as vanilla, and when I found this spray, I knew I had to try it. The scent is light, which is perfect for spraying over our pillows before we go to bed.

And I really like the bottle too!
Add The Finishing Touches
Now we are just about done with the bed. And I know it may seem like a lot. But this is just the first time putting everything together. Once you have gotten your bed made, it’s very easy to keep it looking beautiful, fluffy, and cozy.
Now all that is left to do is add a few finishing touches. And this is easy. Remember, less is more. Try to keep the clutter minimized. Maybe add in a nice plant over a few stacked books. A bedside lamp would look really nice on the nightstand too.

Even a nice floral arrangement can help to add a little something extra to really elevate the feel of the room. But it all starts with your bed. And now that you know the 9 steps to crafting a beautifully styled, fluffy, and cozy bed, what are you waiting for?
