When I first turned one of our spare bedrooms into a craft room and made a craft table, I thought I was pretty good with my storage and everything I would need for my craft room. But as with anything, clutter soon overtook my craft room. And it got to the point where I wasn’t enjoying my crafting as much as I had been. So, over the extended weekend, I decided it was time for an extreme craft room makeover!
Honestly, it was horrible. I am a little ashamed to show how bad it got. I kept bringing in storage to make room for all of the supplies I had been accumulating. But all this ended up doing was take up more space. And give me more places to hoard my supplies.
And I should know better. My father was a hoarder. His father was a hoarder. And I guess I do have hoarding tendencies. But I do have enough sense to realize that enough is enough. And it is time to start over.
Extreme Craft Room Makeover
I decided the best way to begin was to start fresh. So everything had to come out of the room. Well, almost everything. I couldn’t remove my craft desk, it wouldn’t fit through the door. And I would be able to work around it. So it could stay. But everything else had to go.
And in all of my wisdom, I tossed things out that were actually trash. I have a bad habit of hanging onto things because I might have a use for them. But when those things are overtaking the space, well, it’s time to go.
And after everything was clean out, I had the blank slate I had been wanting. It’s nice to have an empty room. I had all kinds of ideas running through my brain of what I could do with this! But first things first, the room needs to be repainted.
Starting Fresh – With Paint
I did not want to spend a lot of money on the paint. So I decided to use my lunch break time wisely and go to Walmart.
I found this Glidden paint for less than $25.
It was a good choice. Having a dark gray wall, I did have to use 2 coats of paint. But it dried fast and covered well. I chose an eggshell finish because it works well in a bedroom. And, after all, that is what this room is, a bedroom.
And after the painting part was done, I really felt accomplished. All 4 walls now match, and everything looks fresh and clean.
Arranging the Furniture
With the painting done, it was time to bring the furniture back in.
Originally, I had planned on building a DIY Dreambox. So I bought 2 shelving units to add to the other 2 shelving units I already had. But once I moved my craft desk to the place I wanted it to be, I realized I did not have enough room for where my homemade Dreambox would go.
So I decided to forgo my original plan and use the bookshelves as is. They do take up the entire wall. But I like it. It works for me. And I think it will give me a backdrop option for future videos.
Next, I had lots of storage cubes. These are very useful for storing supplies. So I decided to remove the closet doors, along with the closet rod meant for hanging clothes.
I moved the storage cubes into the closet, and they fit perfectly! I was able to fit all 3 organizers into the closet.
I cannot believe how much storage space this closet offers with the doors removed. Taking off the closet doors really makes the room look larger, as well as giving me a wonderful space for keeping my crafting supplies organized and out of the way.
Next I brought back in my Cricut, vinyl storage organizer, and computer desk.
And while I had been using a laptop computer, my husband recently upgraded his office computer. So instead of putting that computer into a box, we brought it into my craft room. He even hung a monitor on the wall for me! Now I can work on my computer, like in DesignSpace, while I am working in my craft room!
I Love it!
Organizing the Crafting Overwhelm
With having the space cleaned out and the furniture in place, all that was left to do was bring all of the ‘stuff’ back in. But I do have to say, I was a little torn at this point. I mean, I have this beautiful space, and I did not want to clutter it up.
But I need to bring it back in because, well, this is the craft room, right?
So while I was bringing my crafting supplies back in, I was very mindful of what I kept and what I got rid of. I am going through a HUGE decluttering spree, and I have to say it feels wonderful to get rid of all the stuff. I feel like I have freed myself a bit by letting things go. And believe me, it’s hard. It’s also a little frustrating to see how much money I have spent on things that I will not use. I really think this is the reason I hang on to stuff, because of the money spent.
Extreme Craft Room Makeover
But I need this stuff in my craft room so I can craft. I decided to buy a few organizers to help with this process. I didn’t get crazy, just 1 set of the plastic organizers. These organizers are actually meant for pantry or refrigerator storage. They are really sturdy!
And then, on a trip to Dollar Tree, I did find a few of the cube organizers. Now they make them in half size, which is nice because you can keep things together, and you can see what is in the organizer. I like this better than the full ones because, with the full-size cubes, I can stuff a lot of random ‘things’ into it and then forget about it. This is not ideal for me. Because I will inevitably just stuff – stuff into the cubes with the excuse that I will take care of it later. Spoiler – I have never been able to do that. My husband calls it ‘stuffing’ and not cleaning. And he is right.
So the half-size cube organizers are nice, and I like the way they look in my craft desk. And just in case you are wondering about my craft desk, yes, it is a DIY that my husband and I built. You can read more about that here.
Extreme Craft Room Makeover – The Reveal
And this is it. This is my extreme makeover! What do you think? What would you do differently in your own craft room?
I love where my table is. It may sound silly, but I like to be able to watch TV while I am crafting sometimes.
I also like how many options I have for filming videos. This way, I don’t always have to have the same view for my videos. I kept my pegboard where it was because, well, it works.
I did move my tribute wall for my horse Frisby. I love being able to glance up at it and see my memories of my boy. I loved that horse. I even found a rosette ribbon that I got with his help. It really means a lot to me, which is why I have it in my craft room.
I spend a lot of time in this room. And having this little tribute area for my horse, well, this is special to me.
And ultimately, I think this is what makes my craft room work for me. It doesn’t mean you have to set yours up like this. But maybe there are some things I made you think about if you are thinking about making over your own craft room.
Happy Crafting!
